Outback Bowl 2019: Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Bringing in the new year on January 1, 2019, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Mississippi State Bulldogs college football teams will face off at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa during the Outback Bowl.

John Cohen, MSU Director of Athletics, said: “We are excited to accept a bid to our first Outback Bowl to cap off Joe Moorhead’s successful first season as our head football coach.” It is MSUs ninth straight bowl appearance. The team featured college football’s best defense and demonstrated overall improvement throughout the year, winning four of its last five games, added Cohen. "Tampa is a great city, with an endless number of entertainment opportunities for our fans, and we always look forward to playing in an NFL stadium. I encourage our Bulldog family to pack Raymond James Stadium and send our senior class out the right way.”

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said: “We know we will enjoy outstanding hospitality, and we know we will face a quality opponent from the SEC. This is a great reward for how hard our players have worked and the success they have enjoyed this season."

The game is a culmination of a weeklong schedule of events throughout the Tampa Bay area, highlighted by a beach day in Clearwater and a New Year's Eve parade in Ybor City. The Outback Bowl has been in Tampa Bay for three decades. During this time, it has brought more than a million out-of-market visitors to the region, while creating an estimated $1 billion in economic impact and distributing over $130 million to universities.

HRI Properties purchases city block for Hyatt project

Hotel developer, HRI Properties, recently bought a city-owned block next to Tampa’s City Hall, at the corner of E Kennedy Boulevard and N Florida Avenue, for the tidy sum of $7.6 million. That’s where it will soon break ground on the Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotel construction project.

Two years ago, Tampa invited companies to submit development proposals for the acre of land, which used to be the Cold Storage Café in days gone by.

The city chose HRI Properties – which is based in New Orleans – over two other bidders, because it said it “liked Tampa for its strong job creation and its impressive numbers on hotel revenue per available room”.

The project is made up of a 17-story, 230-room Hyatt Place hotel, and a 115-room Hyatt House hotel. It will boast about 4,000 square feet of meeting space, 3,200 square feet of ground floor retail space, and a 220-space parking garage.

Water Street Tampa breaks ground on its first residential project

On November 8, the development project commenced construction on a pair of apartment towers, rising 21 and 26 stories respectively. The apartments won’t only be for wealthy people – some smaller, more affordable apartments will be included in the mix of units, which will hopefully attract younger, up-and-coming buyers into the project.

Developer Strategic Property Partners’ CEO – James Nozar – plans to take up residence there himself. He says: “What we’re really trying to target is not only some more exclusive homes for move-downs, move-ups, for professionals living downtown, but also homes that are more affordable to those that are priced out of being in downtown. Of course, we’re going to fill in the middle as well, but we think that there’s opportunity on both ends of that, that we’re really trying to hit."

What they will all have in common is a sought-after address – 815 Water Street – right in the middle of the huge Water Street development.

The two towers are due to open in late 2020 and will include 420 apartments and 35,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. They are being designed by global architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates.

Mayor Bob Buckhorn said of Water Street Tampa: "This is going to change the landscape. Not just in a physical sense, but in an emotional sense. It’s going to square off our downtown, activate our waterfront and connect downtown to Ybor City. It is, I think, the most important private development project that has occurred in our city in decades."

Riverview radiology center in the pipeline

Tower Radiology Center is planned for Riverview, in the Shoppes of Southbay retail center.

It will be located at 10615 Big Bend Road, near the southern campus for St. Joseph's Hospital.


In October, Tower Radiology - the largest physician-owned and -operated outpatient radiology practice in Tampa Bay - entered into a partnership with Tampa General Hospital. The center will be operated by both parties.


Bohler Engineering LLC filed an environmental resource permit application with the Southwest Florida Water Management District, for the proposed 3,491-square-foot facility in the center. Currently, Tower Radiology Center has an existing facility at 10689 Big Bend Road in Riverview.


Its other facilities are in Wesley Chapel, Carrollwood, Oldsmar, Bloomingdale, Sun City and multiple Tampa locations, as well as some in southeast Pasco County.

Cross-Bay Ferry to run later and will cost only $8 to ride!

After much speculation, it has been announced that the Cross-Bay Ferry - which travels between Tampa and St. Petersburg - will return on November 1 and run through April next year. It will utilize the Provincetown III high-speed catamaran design that provides a smooth, comfortable 50-minute ride with “plenty of space outside and wide, comfortable seating inside.” It is reported that it will have a well-stocked café with coffees, pastries, snacks, wine, beer and cocktails, and up to 30 bicycles will be able to fit on the ferry.


The ferry will dock near the Florida Aquarium, not far from its previous Tampa home - the Tampa Convention Center, which is currently undergoing renovations. It also has a new St. Petersburg home - the Vinoy Basin near the historic Renaissance Vinoy Hotel - putting riders within walking distance of the Museum of Fine Arts, the Dalí and various Beach Drive dining options.


Tickets will cost adults only $8 - $2 less than during the ferry’s first season two years ago. Kids ages five to 18 will ride for just $3, and it’ll cost $5 for seniors, college students, and active or retired members of the military. Children under the age of four will ride free. The ferry will run Tuesday through Sunday and is set to include later hours, giving passengers the opportunity to have dinner across the bay.


The service is being paid for by the cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg and Pinellas and Hillsborough counties - with each agreeing to put in $150,000 to subsidize the service - plus the Florida Department of Transportation.

CapTrust Building to be demolished to make way for Riverwalk Place

Southland Contractors has received permits (which will be valid until April next year) to demolish the CapTrust Building in downtown Tampa and to construct the foundation of Riverwalk Place - the 53-story mixed-use tower proposed at Ashley Drive and Brorein Street.

The developers of the tower released new renderings in September, ahead of the official opening of its sales center inside the Wells Fargo Center. The tower offers retail and restaurant space on the Tampa Riverwalk, structured parking, office space and 205 condominium units beginning on the 22nd floor.

Larry Feldman, CEO of Feldman Equities and a joint venture partner in the tower, said in a statement: “The demand for reservations for condominiums in Riverwalk Place has far exceeded our expectations, and this is before we officially open our sales gallery downtown. The project is well capitalized and we are taking a diligent approach to construction planning. These permits are an important step in that process and we are thankful for the great working relationship we have with the city of Tampa development staff.”

Deviled Pig opening soon in South Tampa

The Deviled Pig restaurant will open its doors for business on October 30, 2018. Owners Lee Ann Whippen, an award-winning pit master, and Jennifer Daskevich, the 2013 World Sandwich Champion, have a delicious menu lined up for the official opening.

The establishment boasts a huge machine - the Hickory Pits smoker - which can smoke 1000 pounds of meat in a single session. 

Check it out at 3307 S. Dale Mabry Highway and sample the goods - this place is sure to become a must-visit spot in South Tampa!

What will become of vacant LA Fitness space?

Looks like some residents of Hyde Park Village are not on board with the plans for the old LA Fitness Space.

There has been a lawsuit filed against Bartaco by one resident alleging that the noise from bartaco has made it "difficult if not impossible" to live in or lease the condo.

Boston based developer, WS Development, has some pretty elaborate plans for new storefronts, a new fitness facility, a hybrid restaurant/retail concept and a restaurant, ranging in size from just under 2,000 square feet to more than 4,000 square feet.

Sounds pretty awesome to us!

In any case, city council has put the brakes on after initial approval now that a petition has been filed by a resident. There will be a public hearing on Dec 6th.

While all of this development is exciting, it is always helpful to step back and ask ourselves what other impacts will this have on our community, other than adding awesome new places to patronize.
